2nd November – International day to end impunity for crimes against journalists

“Unamos nuestras voces contra la impunidad” (Lets join our voices against impunity), Juliana Castro sings in “No temas” (Do not be afraid), award winning song in the 2011 “Doná tu voz” (Donate your voice) contest organized by the Inter-american Press Association (IPA). The contest purpose was to fight impunity for crimes committed against journalists.

The situation of journalists is extremely worrying. According to UNESCO, 827 press workers were assassinated between 2005 and 2016. In nine out of ten cases, the authors of these crimes remain unpunished. It is not only a heinous crime, but it also violates the whole society´s right to freedom of expression and free access to information.

Why celebrating this day?

It was proclaimed by the United Nations to urge members States to take concrete measures to prevent aggressions against journalists, punish those responsible and promote a conductive and safe environment in which they can independently carry out their work.

The date was chosen in honor of two French journalists who were murdered in Mali on 2nd November 2013.
