The UN maintains that “sport has the power to change the world and historically it has played an important role in all societies, whether in the form of sports competitions, physical activity or even games. It is a fundamental right and a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development, peace, well-being, solidarity and respect ”.

Thus, in 2013 and through its Office on Sport for Development and Peace, the United Nations decided to dedicate a day to sport and its link with development and peace: it proclaimed April 6 as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. The date was chosen to commemorate the first Olympic Games of the modern era, held in Athens, Greece from April 6 to 15, 1896, and “is an opportunity to recognize the role that sport and physical activity play in the communities and lives of people all over the world ”.
